Phones and Microphones A piece for Phones and Microphones in multichannel Diffusion Also needs at least 2 laptops with players Played with electromagnetic pick-ups (called microphones), such as telephone pick-up - wire coil with metal but non-magnetic core - dynamic microphone with destroyed diaphragm - guitar pickup (do not use with laptops) Modes: OFF - Device completely switched off ON - Device switched on, with graphics display STBY - Device is in standby (LOCK) - Intermediate state where phone is taken out of STBY but not unlocked. CAM(era) - Open camera GAL(lery) - Device on and showing a picture in gallery R(ough) : pickup is positioned in a place where a dense texture of high- and medium-pitched sounds are audible. Mostly central part of phone. F(ine) : pickup is positioned in a place where distinct high-pitched sounds are audible. Mostly top / antenna bit of phone C(am) : pickup is positioned above the camera ( either on display side or very close to camera on the back) BUT(ton): Position in OFF mode where the ON/Off Button is audible loud and sharp Timbres: Notes: PBS : the power button is pressed as short is possible. If the phone is OFF, it should not be started by the pressing. BOOT : in OFF state, the power button is pressed until the phone boots SHTWN : in ON state, the phone is shut down by whatever means necessary SWP+ / SWP- : Swipe photo on gallery forward / backward Preparation: Players identify the microphone positions for the different R and F timbres in OFF and ON state. Also get yourself comfortable with the individual phones / instruments. Arrangement: Players will mostly perform in half circle on the stage. 1 8 2 7 3 6 4 5 Players are numbered by 1-(8), starting in the back centre of the circle, then continuing in clockwise sequence. There should be about as many channels as players. Speakers are arranged in the same spatial arrangement way the players are. I. The Beginning Empty stage. Phones OFF Microphones at But position Until all players are on stage: New Player i: play PBS Player i enters stage and goes to their position on the stage (If existing) players on stage: play PBS every 5-10 seconds in a way that synchs up as much as possible with remaining sounds When all players on stage, each player shortens the waiting period continuously until all phones BOOT Players then leave phones to go to STBY (or send them there if necessary) (explanation: This way all players enter the stage successively and the sound builds up, then when the speedup makes all phones start towards the end, then phones settle in texture in standby) II. Texture shifting Player I shows the phone vertically with the microphone on the back and then moves it slowly to the positions below. Other people follow synchronously. When movement is finished, the phone is held horizontally again. Each movement should take 20-40 seconds F(ine) -> move to R(ough) -> move to F(ine) -> move to C(amera) -> move to F(ine) III. Photomania Player in centre of the circle: Leave circle, backwards on audience: Move microphone to C(amera) position, make (7) photos of remaining circle Then, other players take picture of above player Player returns to circle position. Left half of circle: Move microphone to C(amera) position Leave circle, arrange in line from audience towards back of stage . . . . . . . . make 8 photos of other circle half: First: backmost player makes photo of opposite circel. then point camera towards floor Then(after ~1s): two backmost players make photos, point to floor again Add players constantly until 8th player makes photo Left half remains in line, repeat with right half of circle. . . . . . . . . III. The Gallery Waltz Left and right side of circle now stand in opposite lines, and are divided in front and back .B .B .B .B .F .F .F .F First player on back, SW(a)P photos in a tempo that sounds best with phone (about 110 BPM, ternary meter): Back: 1 2 3 | 1 2 3 | 1 2 3 | 1 2 3 | SWP+ SWP- SWP+ SWP- SWP+ SWP- SWP+ SWP- Other 3 players on back join 1st players for 8 x 4 bars. Joining with the back players, the front players play Front: 1 2 3 | 1 2 3 | 1 2 3 | 1 2 3 | SWP+ SWP- SWP+ SWP- SWP+ SWP- SWP+ SWP- IV. Photomania pt 2 Players rearrange in circles. Players in the front switch to C(amera) position. Players with laptops come to centre. Laptops are BOOTed with microphones on HARD DRIVE / FAN and kept ON Players reform circle. 2 opposite players start by photographing each other. Then the 2 next players in clockwise directions and so on, until each player has made 8 photos. Laptop players may modulate humming as they like V. Shutdown Players wait until phones in STBY. Laptops shut down. Microphones are slowly (over 30s-minutes) taken away from phones.
